Overhaul at Pakistan Cricket Board: Resignations, New Leadership, and The Road Ahead

The Pakistan cricket board underwent a major restructuring following the national team’s disappointing performance in the ICC mega event. In the wake of this failure, the management overhaul ensued, resulting in the removal of critical figures. Inzamamul Haq, chairman of the national men’s selection committee and junior selection committee, resigned during the World Cup, prompting discussions about the timing of his decision. Questions arose about why he didn’t wait until the team returned to Pakistan before his resignation.

Additionally, Morne Morkel, Pakistan’s bowling instructor, resigned after the team’s notable bowling struggles during the 2023 WC. Pakistan’s bowling performance faltered significantly despite being considered a formidable bowling side before the tournament.

Babar Azam stepped down as a captain:

Babar Azam, the team’s captain, also stepped down from leadership through 3 formats upon returning to Pakistan. The team’s repeated failures in the World Cup under his captaincy prompted his decision. While many commended Azam’s move, suggesting it would allow him to focus solely on his batting, there were speculations of an agenda by the Pakistan Cricket Board against him. Allegations surfaced that PCB pressured Azam to resign despite his record as one of the top five batters in Pakistan cricket history throughout all patterns.

Latest management:

The restructuring continued with the appointment of new figures to manage PCB. Muhammad Hafiz, a retired player and a former stalwart for Pakistan, assumed the job of director and coach of the country team despite his lack of prior experience in such a capacity. Wahab Riyaz, Pakistan’s sports minister and a notable pacer, was appointed chief selector. Notably, both Riyaz and Hafiz are set to participate in the next PSL edition under the captaincy of Babar Azam for Peshawar Zalmi.

Wrapping Up:

The recent changes within the Pakistan Cricket Board have been numerous, with several departures from management. The upcoming series against Australia will serve as a litmus test for the new leadership and captaincy. However, providing this new management with at least a year to assess their effectiveness is essential, and PCB and fans should exercise patience and support.
